Ollantaytambo: Mandatory Stop

Ollantaytambo is one of the most complete little towns of the Valle Sagrado. This town is located in the Valle Sagrado of the Incas, 72 kilometers/45 miles from the city of Cusco and 32 km/20 mi from Machu Picchu. It is 2,792 meters/9,160 feet above sea level and its climate tends to be warm and mild.

Between October and March, there are two seasons during the year: rainfall with intense temperatures that vary between 11°C/52°F and 18°C/64°F; and between April and September the weather becomes cold during the night and during the day, bright sunlight and clear blue skies with temperatures that vary between 5°C/41°F and 23°C/73°F.

Since Ollantaytambo is located between two slopes, the weather tends to change during dry season, which is between April and September. During those months, there is less chance of rain, the skies are more clear and the temperature is moderate during the day.

If you are going to travel during this time of year, it is important to take light clothes, a hat, and sunblock for during the day and warm clothes for the night. During rainy season, you need a rain poncho or raincoat.

Another important reason is that you will find the train station where the majority of trains take you to Machu Picchu. At the same town, you will find big ruins that look like they can reach the sky. You will also find chunks of ore that have a stone mask engraved in rock. You will be able to enjoy the Chocomuseum nearby the ruins and a craft brewery.
