Salkantay Trek: A different option for hiking to Machu Picchu

Salkantay is a grueling but rewarding 5-day trek to Machu Picchu. It’s one of the most popular alternative treks to the Inca Trail, and often considered to be more scenic. It is about 75 km (46 miles) long and about 3,000 m (10,000 ft) in altitude, so it is considered a challenging trail, compared to the other trekking options in the area.

The trek starts at Mollepata town, high in the Andes Mountains. From there, you’ll hike through valleys and mountain passes, past glaciers and glacial lakes, before finally arriving at the lost city of the Incas. The total walking distance is approximately 43 miles (70 kilometers). Salkantay trek is considered among the 25 best excursions in the world by National Geographic Adventure Travel Magazine.

What is the Salkantay trek?

The Salkantay trek is one of the most popular treks in Cusco, Peru. It is a five-day trek that takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the area, including the Salkantay lake and glacier. The route starts at the town of Mollepata, and takes you up to the Salkantay pass at 15092 feet (4,600 m) altitude.

Salkantay Lake is a beautiful body of water located in southern Peru. It is situated at an altitude of 4,600 meters (15,092 feet), making it one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake is fed by the melting water of the nearby glaciers, and its turquoise waters are a stunning sight against the backdrop of the Andes mountains.

Despite its remote location, Salkantay Lake is a popular destination for trekkers and adventurers. The lake can be reached by a demanding hike that begins in the town of Mollepata, and the journey is well worth the effort. Those who make it to the lake are rewarded with stunning views, and the chance to swim in its refreshing waters. 

From there, you descend into the jungle, and end up at the Inca site of Machu Picchu. The whole trek takes around five days, and is a great way to see some of the best scenery in Peru.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is in the dry season (from April to October). During those months, there is less chance of rain so the roads are in better condition.

In the dry season  the days are sunnier and the nights are colder. According to mountaineering experts, during the months of June, July and August, is the best time to do the Salkantay trek.

Tips for hiking the Salkantay trek

When considering doing the Salkantay trek, you just need to be aware of a few things:

Spend at least one additional day in Cusco to get used to the altitude.
The second day of the Salkantay trek is the hardest.
Do not rush. Enjoy.
Once you cross the Salkantay pass it gets easier.
Bring plenty of snacks and hydrate properly. At higher altitudes, more water is needed and one of the benefits of trekking is that you burn a lot of calories.
If you have difficulties on the first day of Salkantay trek, you can rent a horse for the second day.
Wear warm clothes during the Salkantay trek. The nights are especially cold in the first two days.

The Salkantay route is not for the fainthearted. It is a difficult hike, with some very steep sections. But the scenery is truly breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment you will feel upon reaching Machu Picchu is beyond compare.
